Terence Powderly, a well known national figure as the leader of The Knights of Labor from 1879-1893. He was twice elected as mayor of Scranton. General Jerome F. O'Malley, a Four Star U.S. Air Force General, made aviation history on March 21, 1968 when he flew the first operational mission of the SR-71 "Blackbird"reconnaissance plan deep into North Vietnamese airspace to identify enemy radar signals and to photograph enemy missile sites. The plane flew sixteen miles above the earth, at more than 2,000 miles per hour. The first operational mission is recorded at mach 3.17.
Jerry O'Malley was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Gen. O'Malley later became Vice Chief of Staff of the U. S. Air Force and later the Commander in Chief of the Pacific Air Forces. His final promotion was in 1984, when he was named Commander of the Tactical Air Command at Langley Air Force Base, Virginia. This command put him in charge of all U.S. fighter planes, as well as the Air Force Thunderbirds, and over 116,000 military and civilian personnel. Jerry and his wife Diane were tragically killed in a plane crash at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport as they were returning home for the General to speak at a local Boy Scout dinner.
