Fire Department
The City of Carbondale provides full time fire protection services to its residents through a combination career/volunteer structure. The department operates with 7 full-time, unionized civil servants and 4 volunteer hose companies - Mitchell Hose Co. # 1, Cottage Hose Co. # 2, Columbia Hose Co. # 5, and West Side Hose Co. # 7. The career firefighters are solely responsible for driving and operating all apparatus, while the volunteers provide suppression forces and fire ground support. The City owns three (3) response vehicles, including an 85 foot ladder truck, which all are housed in Fire Headquarters at the intersection of S. Main Street and 6th Avenue.
Chief Tom Brennan Tom Brennan has been a member of the City of Carbondale Fire Department for 34 years. Mr. Brennan was appointed Chief in 2004 and has worked to increase the department's ability to provide enhanced response to emergency incidents through training and new equipment. Since 2004, the department has been able to upgrade existing communications equipment in order to attain interoperability. Chief Brennan and several members of the department have attained various certifications including Fire Fighter I and II, Fire Officer I and Hazmat Operations.

Engine 51 is the workhorse of our fleet as it sees attack on most Structure Fires, Motor Vehicle Accidents, Rescue Calls, and Hazardous Materials Incidents. Engine 51 is also the unit that responds with Decon 35 (Lackawanna County's HazMat Team) and on requests for out of town assists that require an Engine Company.

Ladder 51 responds on all downtown boxes and to target hazards through the city. Ladder 51 also responds to many of our neighboring communities, when requested.

Squad 51 responds as a water supply and backup attack vehicle on most alarms, but is utilized on Brush Fires, Helicopter Landing Zones, and many of our public service incidents.
Fire Prevention Programming The City of Carbondale provides comprehensive fire prevention education programming to pre-school and elementary school students, civic groups, and senior citizens on an annual basis. The City utilizes a variety of methods to present fire prevention education include a fire safety robot and media.
